West Bengal has a prevalence of blindness and vision impairment of about 1.87% and 11.65% respectively according to the National Blindness and Vision Impairment Survey 2015-19. Eye health delivery is a team effort with active roles played by ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians.
Every individual, whether a child, young adult, middle aged and geriatric aged, require an intervention of an optometrist throughout their lives. To cater to this enormous need, the number of available optometrists is less.
The need for quality optometric professionals was long realized and the first modern college of optometry was started in 1985 by Elite School of Optometry in Chennai, India. A pioneer in this field, Elite School of Optometry has begun a new chapter in West Bengal.
World Council of Optometry defines “Optometry as a healthcare profession that is autonomous, educated, and regulated (licensed/registered), and optometrists are the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, detection/diagnosis and management of disease in the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system”.
Optometrists contribute to managing the refractive, low vision care, contact lens, binocular vision services apart from the occupational and community optometry services. There are also other specialty services like neuro-optometry, sports optometry etc. that requires the competence of optometrists. Optometrists also specialize in handling diagnostics to help detect ocular conditions early.
